It begins with community.

Founded in 2007

New York Theatre Barn is an inclusive home for artists and a holistic incubator of original culture-shifting musicals. Since 2007, we’ve given underrepresented artists the freedom to experiment in front of live audiences - often for the first time, while providing them with resources to build something innovative, intentional, and impactful.

Revivals show us who we were.

New Musicals show us who we are and who we can be.

Our Vision

For artists, the support of New York Theatre Barn means investment in process. For audiences, we offer a glimpse inside the blueprint of an original musical being developed in real time. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Joe Barros and Managing Director Kate Trammell, we serve underrepresented artists and audiences in our commitment to anti-racist, equity, anti-ableist, and anti-oppression ideologies. With the philosophy that there is no formula for musical theatre development except authenticity, we are committed to supporting bold new voices. Our five innovative core programming platforms allow us to incubate original musicals in front of live global audiences.  We believe that art is best created in dialogue, so a large part of our process is fostering community.

Accessibility

We have the unique opportunity to not only uplift and inspire, but also to champion the spectrum of voices in our world. Representation and accessibility are important to us, so we’re honored to make space for a community of people who believe that art which challenges us is worth celebrating. With intention, we are also actively expanding who has access to musical theatre developmental opportunities. In our commitment to accessibility and inclusion, we are dedicated to including ASL interpreters for live performances, live CART captioning, among other disability inclusion practices.

In 2024,
we had the opportunity to support:

  • The development of 23 Original Musicals

  • 50 Writers

  • 7 Choreographers

  • 4 Writers and 3 Musicals in our summer residency on Fire Island - Barn on Fire

  • Our podcast Backstage Pass from Broadway Podcast Network featured 9 original musicals, including Teeth and Lewis Loves Clark

  • Theatre Barn Records releases on all streaming platforms of new musicals Café con Lech and Ghost in the Machine, featuring Linedy Genao, Taylor Iman Jones and Eddie Noel Rodríguez

  • ASL Interpreters and Open Captioning at all live performances from our friends at Inclusive Communication Services in our commitment to accessibility and inclusion
