Johnny & the Devil’s Box tells the story of Johnny Baker, a young man who believes he’s the best fiddler that ever was, and aims to prove it. However, another fiddler who haunts the hills of North Georgia disagrees, the Devil himself.  Now, Johnny must contend with the threat of the law, the hypocrisy of the church, young love and tempting fame as he navigates the balance between responsibility and pride. When Johnny meets the Devil at the Crossroads, which way will he go? Johnny & the Devil’s Box proclaims the immense power of music to heal broken communities and relationships when we put aside our pride and join hands in jubilant song and dance.

Johnny & the Devil’s Box has been developed in the Johnny Mercer Writers’ Colony at Goodspeed Musicals, the Drama League Rough Draft Residency, Belmont University Musical Theatre Program (workshop), and is the recipient of a Frank Young Fund’s Writers Retreat Grant with Goodspeed Musicals.

James Armstrong (Book) has had his plays performed by Detroit Repertory Theatre, Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, the Abingdon Theatre Company, and other professional companies. The New York Times hailed his play Foggy Bottom as "one of the most international farces around" and the Detroit Free Press called Capital an "inspired new comedy." James wrote the books for the new musicals Ordinary Island and Keep On Walkin', the latter of which won the Anna Zornio Children's Theatre Playwriting Award. He has an MFA in Dramatic Writing from the Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama and is a member of the Dramatists Guild.

Set against the 2007-08 financial crisis, two brothers' tense relationship comes apart when one of them is arrested for financial fraud and the other can't help, or won't. Inspired by the play The Lucky One by A.A. Milne, Burned asks what we owe each other, and what we are owed.

Songs from Burned have been presented by the In the Works series at The Duplex, and by Golden Fleece's Saturdays at Square One.

Joshua H. Cohen (Composer/Lyricist) is excited to return to NYTB, after his New York cabaret debut So These Three Girls Walk in a Bar…, the multi-writer musical Speargrove Presents, and the oratorio version of Tamar of the River (co-produced with Choral Chameleon). Honors include a Jonathan Larson Grant, Anna Zornio Children’s Theatre Playwriting Award (lyrics, Keep On Walkin’), and a MAC Award nomination for cult cabaret hit “The Sacrifice of Love” (a.k.a. the waxing song). Productions include play The Thirteenth Commandment (Libra Theater, 7 NY Innovative Theater Award nominations, 2 wins), musical Tamar of the River (Prospect Theater Company, 2 Drama Desk nominations, world premiere recording from Yellow Sound Label), and the children’s musical Flight School (Vital Theatre, OCR available, national and international tour). Many other productions, readings, and workshops across the country; for more details visit www.JoshuaHCohen.com.
