Funded by a generous gift from the Amber Foundation, the Choreography Lab was created to elevate and expand the use of dance in musical theatre. It is also the only curated choreography platform where choreographers and writers collaborate to develop movement for new musicals during incubation. The lab’s unique programming supports choreographer development, fosters collaboration between writers and choreographers earlier in the creative process, and serves as an educational forum where all parties can strengthen and specify how dance can be used to convey story and character.

These labs all serve our core mission, but each lab engages the
participating choreographers & writers in a unique creative process:
NEW WORKS LAB
The New Works Lab makes space for 3 choreographers to bring 3 original musicals to life, often for the first time. Both the choreographers and writers benefit from seeing their piece staged while still in development.
OPEN LAB
The Open Lab allows choreographers to present their own narrative-based dance pieces, each with a personal choreographic development goal. In this lab, 3 choreographers are encouraged to develop language, style, and character-driven movement. The Choreographers benefit from having the opportunity to craft theatrical dance pieces with minimal constraints.
1 SHOW / 3 CHOREOGRAPHERS LAB
The 1 Show / 3 Choreographers Lab allows choreographers to workshop different numbers from a never before staged musical. In this lab, 3 choreographers see how their colleagues approach material from the same show. Both the choreographers and writers benefit from seeing and discussing the stylistic similarities and differences across the presentation.

APPLICATION INFORMATION
Seeking 3 Choreographers for our OPEN Choreography Lab
Applications Due: Friday, October 7, 2022
We are seeking applications for the next installment of The Choreography Lab! We will be selecting three early to mid- career choreographers to participate in our November 14th OPEN lab. In this lab, choreographers will have the opportunity to create short pre-recorded dance pieces of their own devising. The only requirement is that the work be story driven and/or contain a narrative of some kind.
To apply, visit the lab application page on New York Theatre Barn's Website and complete our standard choreographer questions. Additionally, Please include 2-3 sentences about your proposed piece.
For this lab, each choreographer will be paired with a mentor choreographer to facilitate their work. Additionally, we are pleased to announce that choreographers selected for this lab will have the opportunity to select dancers for their piece from a special audition co-produced by New York Theatre Barn and Broadway Dance Center!
If you applied to the lab in 2022, a whole new application is not necessary. Simply email us that you'd like to be considered, and submit 2-3 sentences about your proposed piece.
Applications will be accepted through the end of day on Friday, October 7th -- we're looking forward to hearing from you!
