Lyrics by Jake Brandman
Music by Josh Freilich, Scotty Arnold, Luke DiSomma, Rebekah Melocik, Kevin Velez, Jess Glover & Willem Oosthuysen
Original Concept for "Straight Guys Who Love Musical Theater" by Jake Brandman & Olivios Karaolides
Musical Director Jess Glover
Featuring Jacey Powers, Jaclyn Huberman, Jessica Kent, Wilson Bridges, Michael Deleget, Lorinda Lisitza & Jason Mills
A NOTE FROM OUR ATTORNEYS: Defying Gravity: The Songs of Jake Brandman is in no way associated with Wicked, Stephen Schwartz, Idina Menzel, or witches of any sort.
Defying Gravity: The Songs of Jake Brandman is, however, associated with bloodthirsty secretaries, insolent grandchildren, passive-aggressive schoolgirls, and most shocking of all, totally straight people who happen to love showtunes. You should really see it, because if you don’t, we’ll sue you. No, really. We’re lawyers. This is what we do.

Substitute Dreams
A presentation of the new musical

Music by Brett Schrier
Book & Lyrics by Tess Barker & Brett Schrier
Musical Director Jason Wetzel
Featuring Marisa Dargahi & Kasey Marino (Hairspray)
What defines success?
Is it truly possible to ‘have it all?’
Substitute Dreams is the ‘hauntingly beautiful musical’ of two best friends - Matthew, a burgeoning photographer, and Morgan, a gifted fashion designer, who grow up with a common dream. Fresh out of art school, they fantasize about a future where they will ‘have it all’ - a fairytale career, money, friends, and the perfect family to enjoy it with. However, as time slips by…they each make choices that pull them closer to half of that dream, forcing them to leave the other half behind. Substitute Dreams recounts life’s bittersweet voyage; exploring success, sacrifice, and the way time can dictate both. It examines questions that we all think about…but rarely dare to discuss.
Brett Schrier is thrilled to add his most recent original music, book, & lyrics for Substitute Dreams to the musical theatre repertoire. After a successful AEA Staged Reading in May, this innovative piece will continue the developmental process this coming year. Brett’s first original musical, Take Two, recently earned rave reviews for the World Premiere Production at Northern Stage, and several more regional productions are in the works for the upcoming season. He also composed an original musical score for an adaptation of Mr. Popper’s Penguins, which opened its first regional theatre production in May 2010. Brett’s musical arrangements are frequently heard in public performances and recordings. He has conceived, directed, and arranged numerous cabarets and concerts, and his work is continually performed at distinguished New York City venues including: Ars Nova, Joe’s Pub, The Duplex, and The Knitting Factory. Brett also served as Music Director for Broadway In South Africa – and continues to spend time educating young musicians around the globe. Brett is a graduate of The Boston Conservatory, where he pioneered an individualized degree in Musical Direction for the Musical Theatre. Some of his recent musical directing/conducting credits include: I Love You…You’re Perfect…Now Change, 42nd Street (National Tour), Hairspray (National Tour), Les Miserables, Cats, Miss Saigon, The Will Rogers Follies, Fiddler On The Roof, Beauty And The Beast, and A Chorus Line. He resides in New York, where he continues to compose original music, teach musical theatre at Marymount Manhattan College, and work as a private vocal coach to some of Broadway’s most gifted stars. Brett is a proud member of ASCAP, The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers.
