CHILD OF HUNGRY TIMES
A new play written and performed by Bridget Bailey
Based on the works of Ludmilla Petrushevskaya
Directed by Jay O’Berski
Well-received by Seattle and Russian audiences, New York Theatre Barn is proud to present the New York premiere of Bridget Bailey's poignant and funny solo show based on the controversial writings of Soviet dramatist Ludmilla Petrushevskaya. Petrushevskaya's works were only recently made available to the public, and she has since become one of the most well known and cutting edge female playwrights in all of Russia. Child of Hungry Times reveals and revels in the lives of six women through the humor and heartache of living under the Soviet regime. A powerful evening filled with music, potatoes and Russian jokes.
“Bailey’s performance is one of those marvels of quick-change artistry, not just costumes, but posture, gait, and accent, too.”
—La Rhussophobe Journal ; Seattle, Wa.
“…the great achievement of the show is the combination of Petrushevskaya’s groundbreaking writing…and [Bailey’s] own remarkable acting gifts.”
—Rob Person, Darkness at Noon: Reflections on Russia
“…[it’s] pure talent Bailey displays in creating her gallery of characters.”
—Richard Morin, The Seattle Weekly, USA

THE BIRTH OF A NEW PLAY AND AN EMERGING ARTIST
Child of Hungry Times began as Bridget Bailey's senior thesis project at Duke University. After performing the play at Duke, Bailey received a grant to bring the show to Seattle, where it ran at the Washington Ensemble Theatre and was chosen as an "Editor's Pick" in Seattle Weekly. After the Seattle run, Bailey brought the show to Russia, where it was workshopped for a third time at the Lisov Lab Company in Moscow. Ludmilla Petrushevskaya herself attended a performance where she met with Bailey afterwards.
GOING GREEN
The Planet Connections Festival is NYC's first eco-friendly theatre festival. Every show involved has chosen a specific partner charity in which their production will benefit. Child of Hungry Times has chosen to partner with Broadway Care/Equity Fights AIDS. In addition to partnering with BC/EFA, the production will work to make the show as "green" as possible by using found props, sets, costumes and printing all programs on recycled paper. www.PlanetConnectionsFestivity.com
