Letter
I have always had the need
to create and facilitate in the creative process ever since I could
remember. As a child, I came across the most incredible discovery…the
1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz. It was not only an epic journey
of finding one’s self and realizing that it was as close as your own
back yard but it infused many theatrical genres: theatre, music,
dance, fantasy, etc. After watching The Wizard of Oz hundreds of times
and dressing up like all of the characters for various family
functions, I knew that, for the rest of my life, I wanted to tell
stories as rich, as magical and as thought-provoking as this one as
well as through these incredible mediums. Around that same time, my
mom took me to see a local community theatre production of The Wizard
of Oz. The story soared to even greater sites as I had the privilege
of being in the same room as the characters in the story! A few years
down the road, I was in that same production at the same community
theatre. Shortly after, I discovered another magical place…New York
City, though I never went there until I was thirteen years old. Now
‘there’ is ‘here’ and it’s been worth the wait. Through this
incredible form we call the theatre, it is my wish to educate, to make
people leave the theatre asking questions, to explore controversial
themes and subject matters, merge various styles and continue to
challenge the art form as we know it. I'm a thrilled to be a part of a
springboard for future actors, directors, choreographers, designers,
writers, composers, lyricists and creators of the theatre. Let the
journey begin... |

NYTB in the D-Lounge: A Springboard
for Writers and Performers
New York Theatre Barn in the D Lounge is a monthly fundraising event
that was created in May 2007.
On April 16, 2007, we launched our company with UNTITLED, an evening
of songs from brand new musicals at the Daryl Roth DR2 Theatre in
Union Square. The evening also commenced with a series of cabaret
performances in the Daryl Roth D Lounge. The event was so successful
that we were invited to perform once a month in the D Lounge.
NYTB in the D Lounge takes place once a month and is always on a
Monday night. The event is intended to showcase up-and-coming
songwriters and performers, and occasionally merges new artists with
high-established writers and performers in the industry. We
occasionally offer selections from our current projects as well as
others we are in the process of developing. While the event lives in a
cabaret atmosphere, expectations and ambitions are high. In addition,
the event is designed to also work as a networking tool between the
artists involved and the artists who attend the event.
The evening is a fusion of cabaret, musical theatre and popular
music—and is ultimately a celebration of the artists involved. While
this is the formula that we currently follow, there are no limitations
to the kinds of performances we are interested in producing. For
instance, it is our hope that we will eventually include bands,
singer-songwriters and other forms of performance art.
Thrilled,
Joe Barros
