Letter
It’s hard to believe that it
has only been a year since New York Theatre Barn opened in April of
2007 with Untitled 1. New York
Theatre Barn has grown more than I could have anticipated this past
year, and it is because of you and your support and belief in our
mission that New York Theatre Barn has thrived. For that I am truly
grateful, and humbled.
When Joe Barros, Producing Artistic Director, and I started NYTB a
year ago we wanted to create a company that stood for the most
precious and important elements of this business… ideas and the people
who have them. This concept may seem obvious, but it is too often
forgotten or ignored. It has been our mission to remember that success
can only be achieved when the first vital steps in the creative
development of an idea are nurtured and encouraged and are presented
in a forum where the process is more important than the product. It
has also been our goal to encourage artists to have ideas and to
provide them with a safe environment in which they could explore and
develop them.
Witnessing what the creative minds around us have generated and shared
with us this past year has been an amazing and inspiring experience.
It has been our pleasure to present some extraordinary work in varying
stages of development. We have also felt validated in our mission by
your response. We have encouraged everyone to take part in this
collaborative and creative process by sharing your thoughts and ideas,
and by developing relationships with us and with the artists. You all
have embraced your role in the development of these pieces and have
provided an opportunity for these plays and these artists to have a
bright and successful future. For that we are grateful.
With our anniversary show, Untitled 2,
comes our recommitment to you. We continue to dedicate ourselves to
the development of new work, the promotion of the advancement of the
individual artist, the development and strengthening of relationships
in the theater community, and the education of future generations of
theatre professionals. Whether in concert, reading, workshop,
production or the classroom New York Theatre Barn will continue to
help the theatre community move toward the future with respect for the
past. You are all as much a part of New York Theatre Barn as I, so
with your continued support we can continue to create special and
honest work that will be around long after we have passed the torch.
I am excited about what is to come in this next year, and I am
grateful that you have given us this opportunity.
Thank you,
David Rigler
Executive Artistic Director
